The XVI's Ride, Reviewed: Heel Air Over a Phylon Midsole
The Air Jordan XVI rides on a Phylon midsole with a visible Air unit in the heel. That’s the whole verified cushioning story, and the honest consequence of it is a ride that is firm, stable, distinctly heel-biased, and completely of its moment. If you’re arriving from a modern foam sneaker, this review is mostly about recalibrating what you expect.
What Phylon actually is
Phylon is a compression-moulded foam midsole material — light for its era, resilient enough for basketball, and cheap to shape into complex geometry. It was the default performance midsole across a huge swathe of turn-of-the-millennium athletic footwear, and it was chosen for good reasons: low weight, decent rebound, and the ability to hold a designed shape under load.
What Phylon is not is soft. It was never intended to be. Basketball midsoles of the period prioritised stability, court feel, and lateral support over the pillowy sensation that dominates lifestyle footwear now. Judged against its contemporaries the XVI’s platform was a quality setup. Judged against a 2026 cushioning shoe it will feel like a plank with manners.
The heel Air unit: where the shoe protects you
The visible Air unit sits in the heel, and that placement tells you where the shoe expects impact to arrive. On heel strike — walking, standing, coming down from a step — there’s a discernible cushion that takes the hard edge off. It’s the most modern-feeling thing about the XVI’s ride, and on a sound pair it still works.
Two honest notes. First, an Air unit is a pressurised structure, and on visible-window pairs it’s worth inspecting for cloudiness or an obviously deflated look before you trust it. Second, an Air unit in the heel is a cushioning solution for the heel. It does not make the shoe feel plush anywhere else.
The forefoot: a claim we won’t make
Here is where most write-ups about old sneakers go wrong, and where we’re going to stop short.
We are not going to tell you what cushioning technology, if any, sits under the XVI’s forefoot. We haven’t been able to establish it to a standard we’d stake the site’s credibility on, and it is exactly the sort of detail that gets asserted confidently by one source and then copied forever. Forefoot cushioning is a claim with a specific answer, and a specific answer you can’t verify is worse than an admitted gap.
What we can tell you is how the front of the shoe behaves, which is what you actually feel: firm, direct, and low on cushioned sensation, with the foam and the outsole doing the work rather than any noticeable pocket of give. If that reads as a description rather than a spec, that’s deliberate. Descriptions of behaviour we can stand behind. Component lists we can’t.
What the ride is like in practice
Standing. Better than you’d guess. Firm midsoles are actually reasonable for standing, because they don’t collapse and leave your foot searching for a stable base. The support the XVI offers is genuine.
Walking. Perfectly livable on a structurally sound pair. Not cushioned, not bouncy, not tiring in normal doses. The heel Air earns its place across a day of ordinary walking.
Long distances and hard surfaces. This is where the age of the platform tells. There is no energy return in the modern sense, and the firmness accumulates. If your day involves miles of concrete, this is not the shoe you reach for, and we’d say the same about most basketball shoes of the period.
In cold weather. Foam stiffens when it’s cold, and old foam stiffens more. A winter XVI rides firmer than a summer one. Not a defect, just physics.
The age multiplier
Every sentence above describes a healthy midsole, and most XVIs in circulation don’t have one. Phylon hardens with time regardless of whether a shoe was worn, so a pair that has sat in a box since 2001 — or since the model’s later returns, which are themselves getting on in years — will ride firmer than it did new. Aged foam also fails, sometimes without warning, and a XVI whose midsole has gone chalky is a display object rather than footwear.
That means the practical answer to “how does the XVI ride?” depends less on the design than on the individual pair. Flex-test before wearing, look for sidewall cracking, and read our materials and durability review before spending anything. Nothing in this review survives a crumbling midsole.
Can you fix the firmness?
Only a little. A thin aftermarket insole can take some sting out of the ride, but the XVI’s snug interior does not leave room for a thick one — you’ll trade cushioning for a fit problem, and the fit is already the demanding part of this shoe. The better adjustment is expectational. Wear the XVI for the reasons it’s interesting, not as a comfort shoe.
Verdict
The XVI’s ride is competent, honest, and dated. Stable underfoot, protected at the heel, direct at the front, and firmer with every year that passes. It is not a bad platform; it’s a 2001 platform being asked to compete in a market that solved cushioning three times over since.
